ONE YOUNG WORLD

*

*

G'day guys,

Today I introduce something that many of you will never have heard of - One Young World.

What IS One Young World?

One Young World was founded in 2009 by David Jones and Kate Robertson. It is a London-based charity that gathers together young people from around the world, helping them make lasting connections to create positive change. It stages an annual Summit where the young delegates, backed by the One Young World Counsellors, debate and formulate solutions for the pressing issues the world faces. No youth-dominated event outside the Olympic Games brings together more countries than One Young World.

At the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Summits delegates were guided by a line-up of Counsellors that included Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Bob Geldof, Kofi Annan, Professor Muhammad Yunus, HKH Prince Haakon of Norway, Jamie Oliver, Jack Dorsey and Joss Stone. Click here for full list of Counsellors.

After each Summit, the newly-minted One Young World Ambassadors work on their own initiatives or lend the power of the One Young World network to those already in existence. Of those in employment, many return to their companies and set about creating change from within, energising their corporate environment. Since the 2010 Summit, One Young World Ambassadors have been creating change on a global level. Previous initiatives have included the presentation of The Missing Millennium Development Goal to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and the creation of the first-ever African Student Leaders Summit.

To date, almost four million people have been directly impacted by the work of One Young World Ambassadors. There are currently more than 125 projects and initiatives involving in excess of 100 countries.

*

*

Who can be a One Young World Ambassador?

One Young World delegates are 18-30 years old and have demonstrated their leadership potential. Many have already had an impact in their home countries on a range of issues, including the role of business in society, transparency in business and government, the impact of climate change, global health and hunger relief.

If you think you meet the requirements, we'd welcome your application to join the pool of Candidates. Once approved, profiles are displayed on the One Young World website. Here, Candidates may seek the necessary funding to be a delegate at the Summit. Apply to attend here.

At the Summit Closing Ceremony, delegates graduate as One Young World Ambassadors, joining a global network of young leaders who are creating a positive change around the world.

*

*

How is it funded?

Delegates expenses to attend a Summit may be sponsored by private citizens, companies, NGOs, education establishments, etc. These backers are known as Delegate Champions.

To date, this funding, per delegate, is the only sponsorship that has been received by One Young World.

More information about how to become a Delegate Champion can be found here.

The cost for each delegate attending the Summit encompasses travel within the host city (to and from hotels and to and from break-out events), accommodation, meals, access to laptops, desktops and mobile devices, venue costs, chaperones and satellite and wireless connectivity.

2012 Summit

The third annual One Young World Summit

- held in Pittsburgh, Pa., on October 18-22.

The four-day Summit served as a platform for delegates, supported by high-profile counsellors, to address and identify solutions to the same issues that world leaders tackle every day – including global business and health, education and sustainable development, unemployment, the role of government versus global business, leadership and governance and social business.

Highlights from the One Young World 2012 Summit included:

  • An Opening Ceremony held in Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts, set to music from the world-famous Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Children's Festival Chorus of Pittsburgh, created an inspiring Flag-laying Ceremony. President Bill Clinton was the keynote speaker, and answered questions from delegates on pressing world issues.

  • Delegates attended an energetic and festive Welcome Bridge Party with fireworks on the Roberto Clemente Bridge.

  • Among the first-day highlights of the One Young World Summit was the announcement of the One Young World Social Business Accelerator. This new initiative will provide financing to growing social businesses, as well as access to the network of One Young World Ambassadors, to assist their development and expansion into new global markets.

  • Jamie Oliver, chef and founder of the Food Revolution, led a panel discussion about the global obesity and malnutrition epidemic. Oliver reinforced the importance of working within school systems to increase education about healthy eating and cooking. Oliver also inspired the city of Pittsburgh to take on the Food Revolution - announced at a press conference Thursday, Oct. 18 at Phipps Conservatory.

  • Jack Dorsey, creator of Twitter and Square, Bob Geldof, KBE and Ken Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, participated in the Transparency and Integrity Plenary Session. Dorsey stressed the urgent need for transparency in business and in politics, adding that Twitter and Square were both built entirely on the foundation of transparency.

  • Saturday highlights included an ethical business panel, led by Antony Jenkins, executive director, Barclays. Panel participants included Will Hutton, author, Them & Us and former Editor-in-Chief, Observer; Sabine Zindera, VP Corporate Legal & Compliance, Siemens; Niel Golightly, VP Communications, Shell Oil Ltd.; and Doug Richard, entrepreneur and founder, School for Startups.

  • Also on Saturday, a Global Health plenary session addressed pressing international health issues, including HIV, AIDS and equality for people with disabilities.

  • On Saturday evening, the delegates spent time out and about in Pittsburgh. Breakout sessions were held at various Pittsburgh hot-spots, including the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning, PNC Park, Phipps Conservatory and several non-profits and businesses. Then, they enjoyed relaxing home dinners with families (120!) all over the city, who opened their doors and hearts to One Young World.

  • Kofi Annan helped to bring the Summit to a close, by encouraging the delegates to become good global citizens, and that they should start small, by making positive change in their own communities.

  • During the closing ceremony of the One Young World Summit, delegates tied ribbons symbolic of their collective unity and hopes for the future and passed them onto the stage. Allegheny County Executive Richard Fitzgerald handed the One Young World baton to Chris Vondo, member of the Mayoral Committee of Johannesburg, site of the fourth annual One Young World Summit in 2013.

27 November 2012 - Guest Young Adult - 'LC'

GUEST

YOUNG ADULT

'LC'

*

*

G'day guys,

Today I welcome another young adult as my guest - 'LC', an exceptional young woman with so many talents. LC is one of my 17 young readers who read my manuscripts and complete a simple questionnaire to keep me on track. Welcome, LC. Let it rip ...

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOU – GENDER, AGE AND PERSONALITY.
Well, I am a 15-year-old Aussie girl who loves reading, animals, horse-riding, music, Irish dancing and being with my friends.

WHICH COUNTRY DO YOU LIVE IN?

Australia!!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FAMILY?
We are a regular, (if slightly dysfunctional!), generally happy family. Yeah, sure, we have the normal family disagreements, etc., but we resolve them quickly and are just a really close family.

DO YOU LIVE IN A CITY, RURAL, BEACHSIDE, HIGH-RISE OR DESERT AREA?
I live in a semi-rural area, in between two small towns. We have 35acres of grassy paddocks, with seven horses, two cows, a chicken, two ducks, a dog, two cats and a rabbit to inhabit them.

DO YOU ATTEND A PRIVATE OR GOVERNMENT SCHOOL?
I attend a private, Catholic school, which is part boarding school.

*

*

WHAT YEAR ARE YOU CURRENTLY ATTENDING?
Right now I am in year 10.

IS IT AN ALL GIRLS / BOYS SCHOOL, OR CO-ED?
My school is co-ed, with both day students and boarders. I am a day student.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE AND DISLIKE ABOUT SCHOOL?
I love that my school is co-ed, so that we can mix with both boys and girls, which means we can form close and lasting friendships with all kinds of people.

WHAT SUCKS MOST ABOUT THE TEACHERS?
Nothing, really. I have great teachers, generally; especially my current English teacher. A few can be a bit irritating when they tell us to work in silence, but, hey, that’s life!

HAVE YOU BEEN BULLIED AT SCHOOL? BRIEFLY, WHAT HAPPENED?
Yes, actually. Basically, two girls were making nasty comments about myself and a friend to our other friends, and in front of our faces, but not to us. There were several incidents where the girls would say horrible things about my friend in my presence, and did the same about me in her presence. They would ask my other friends to tell me to move away from them in class, which my friends refused to do, and they spread rumours around about my friend to our year level. They also excluded us from invites to social events and told our other friends, who they did invite, that we weren’t allowed near these events.

*

*

DO YOU HAVE A PART-TIME JOB AFTER SCHOOL?
No, but I work at my family business on Saturdays, and am on the lookout for a part-time job elsewhere in my local area.

WHO IS YOUR BEST FRIEND AND WHY?
Hmm, that’s a hard one, because I have more than one. The best friend I have known the longest, ever since we were tiny baby girls, lives in Tasmania, so we keep in contact via letters and social networking. We tell each other absolutely everything, and are always there for each other in emergency situations with a quick, mad texting session to sort out serious boy dramas and the like; no stretch of ocean can keep us apart!!! I have a best friend that goes to another school, and she’s in the year below me, and we still keep in contact and catch up. Finally, I have three best friends at my school who I can tell anything and everything and know that I’ll always be able to count on them to cheer me up and make me laugh, and who I can talk about the most random and bizarre things with. All of these people are my best friends because they are always there for me, I can trust them with anything and everything, and they are amazingly fun to be around.

IS RELIGION IMPORTANT TO YOUR DAILY LIFE? WHY?
Yes and no. At school we say a prayer each morning and we go to church occasionally, but I don’t devote my life to my faith. Religion is always there, and I try to live my life as a good Christian.

WHAT OTHER INTERESTS DO YOU HAVE – SPORT, HORSE-RIDING, READING, MUSIC? TELL US MORE.
Well, all of the above, almost!! I ride horses, I play three musical instruments – the flute, the violin and the piano – and I love to read! I think that I spend the majority of my life with a book in my hand, and I love to get totally lost inside a good book. My mum always says that she could take the house away while I’m reading, and I wouldn’t notice it!!

IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO BE WHATEVER YOU WANTED, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I’m really not sure. There are so many amazing things out there that I wouldn’t know where to begin! I would love to be an animal scientist and bring back extinct species through cloning, etc., or an amazing author, or a helicopter pilot. So many choices!!!

*

*

ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT?
Yes, I am. The way I see it is that if we want the world to be the best it can be; green, fresh air, open spaces and rural lands and areas, then we have to look after it, so that ourselves and future generations can enjoy it.

HAVE YOU TRAVELLED OUTSIDE YOUR OWN COUNTRY? WHERE?
No, I haven’t. I have only been to a few places in Australia, such as Tasmania, Victoria, Adelaide, ACT (Canberra) and NSW (only Sydney). I am hoping to travel to Europe next year with my Irish Dancing academy, but no solid plans have been made as yet.

IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO SAY SOMETHING TO ALL WORLD LEADERS, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?
I would say to them that they have a responsibility to keep this world on track and to make it a better place. They have to make the right choices for the good of this world, because our futures lie in their hands.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
At the moment? Pass my exams!! I really don’t have anything major planned for the future, yet. I still need to figure out where my current path is heading, and I’m taking each day as it comes. I would like to go to university one day, but I don’t yet know what I’ll be studying. I still have so many ideas about my future careers running through my head, and I haven’t really decided upon a career that I really am 100% passionate about yet.

 WHAT WORRIES YOU MOST?
Failure and rejection. I am afraid that I won’t be good enough, and that I will be rejected by people; universities, future employers, guys, etc.

*

*

WHAT WORRIES YOU MOST ABOUT THE WORLD?
That one day, it will be a bad place, full of pollution, war, violence, hardship, etc. I don’t want that sort of a world for my future children and family.

DO YOU THINK BEING A PARENT IS A TOUGH JOB?
Yes, absolutely. My respect goes out to all parents out there, trying to guide your children to being the best they can be, and achieving their dreams. Turning them into role models, leaders, good Samaritans, world-changers and the like. Love ya work.

DO YOU EVER STAND UP FOR YOURSELF OR THE RIGHTS OF OTHERS?
Yes, I do. If I see people bullying, harassing or picking on someone else, I let them know what I think of it!

WHO DO YOU ADMIRE MOST? WHY?
My mum. She has worked tremendously hard to get us where we are; we have our own house, we go to good schools, we are happy, we have fun, we have so many animals, and just generally have great lives.

DO YOU USE SOCIAL MEDIA OUTLETS (Twitter, Internet, MSN, Yahoo, Skype, emails & Facebook) TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR FRIENDS?

Yes, I do. I have three email accounts and a Facebook account, and I use these to send work to and from school, and to keep in contact with friends, through emails, Facebook and texting.

*

*

DO YOU THINK POLITICIANS AND WORLD LEADERS ARE DOING A GOOD JOB?
I believe that they are trying very hard to do what is right by the world, but they are only human, and cannot be expected to be perfect. And besides, many people have many different opinions as to what is right and wrong for the world, and not everyone is going to be happy, no matter what is done. I think they are doing the best job they know how to do, and I would not like to be in their shoes.

 WHAT INSPIRES YOU THE MOST?
Possibilities. Knowing that I can be anything I want to be if I put in the effort, knowing that I can take opportunities that could lead anywhere, and knowing that my life is just beginning, and that there is so much out there to see, do and experience.

WHAT, OR WHO, HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? WHY?
Again, it would have to be my mum. She has always been there for me when I need her, and has tried her hardest to guide me down the right paths. She has always supported me, no matter what, and loves me unconditionally, even if sometimes I don’t appreciate it. She would, and has done, anything and everything I have ever needed her to do and more, and I couldn’t ask for anything different. When I grow up (if ever!), I want to be like her.

 DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT DAY.
My perfect day would be to have a day where I could gather all of my closest friends in one place and introduce them to eachother (those who haven’t met), then just spending the day doing something exciting, like laser tag, paintballing or something like that, and just generally enjoying life and talking about anything and everything.

DO YOU READ BOOKS?
YES!!!!! I cannot live or function without them. They are an essential of living, and I would be lost without them. My all-time favourite quote is from ‘A Game of Thrones, by George R. R. Martin. It goes, “A mind needs books like a sword needs a whetstone, if it’s to keep its edge.” – Thank-you Tyrion Lannister!!!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK? WHY?
I don’t really have one; I can’t choose!! Some of my favourite books and authors are J.K. Rowling, Clancy Tucker, The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, Philip Pullman’s Dark Materials, Christopher Paolini (Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, Inheritance), Derek Landy, the Pretty Little Liars series and my new-found obsession, the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series by George R. R. Martin!!! All of the books/series’ by these authors are wonderful stories with amazing storylines and incredible depth and meaning. They are my favourites because I can get so totally lost within their pages that I can almost forget reality and live inside each of their individual worlds.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE? WHY?
Again, I don’t really have one; there are too many! Some really amazing ones are the Harry Potters, Avatar, The Last Airbender, Australia, The Hunger Games, Pretty Little Liars the TV series, and HBO’s amazing series, ‘Game of Thrones’, based on ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series by George R. R. Martin! These movies/series’/TV shows are amazingly moving, mind-blowing and heart-stoppingly exciting. I could watch them (and have!!) several times over, and each time picked up on something new.

WHAT WAS THE WORST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO YOU?
The worst thing to happen to my family was when my auntie passed away after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) at the age of 44. I was only young at the time, just seven years old, but it was a pretty traumatic experience for all of us, and I remember it really clearly.

WHAT WAS THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO YOU?
Wow, where do I start?! So many amazing things have happened to me over my lifetime that it’s impossible to choose one! Some of the highlights would have to be meeting my best friends, getting my 96-year-old piano for my birthday, the arrivals of all my horses/ponies, winning Horse of the Year, Tasmania twice and coming Reserve the third time, and one ordinary day spent at my grandparents when I read a manuscript by one ‘Clancy Tucker’, who turned out to be my second-cousin, and which opened up a new world of reading, and how my amazing friendship with Clancy Tucker was formed.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE?
I would combat global warming, rid the world of poverty, and go around “Kicking evil very hard in the face.” – Thanks go out to Derek Landy for that awesome quote.

DO YOU THINK MUCH ABOUT WORLD POVERTY, REFUGEES, ASYLUM SEEKERS AND HOMELESS PEOPLE?
Yes, of course. I pity them, and I hope that one day soon, their lives will change for the better, and I donate to charities whenever I can.

DO YOU DO ANY CHARITABLE WORK?
Yes, I do. I donate money to charities, clothes and toys to the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul, etc., and I have done volunteer work at Edgar’s Mission, Animal Rescue Centre.

WHAT, OR WHO, ANNOYS YOU MOST?
First World Problems. It really bugs me when people complain about the most minor things, like not being able to go to some concert, or not liking their hair, or breaking a fingernail. There are people out there who are starving, homeless, enslaved or dying from treatable illnesses because they have no money and live in countries with little resources. Sure, I’ve been guilty of it, but I soon realise that there are others with bigger problems than mine, and I stop complaining.

*

A special book?

*

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR?
I’m not sure. I haven’t done anything majorly spectacular in my lifetime. I guess I could say my horse riding, but I stopped going to shows a few years ago. Since then, my biggest achievements are being a part of the school production, getting good exam results and being asked to dance in a military tattoo in Hong Kong with some others from my dancing academy. Unfortunately, I was unable to go, but just being asked to perform in it was amazing.

HAVE YOU WON ANY PRIZES AND AWARDS? TELL US MORE.
With my horse riding, I’ve won many ribbons and some trophies. I won Horse of the Year, Tasmania when I was three, came runner up when I was four, and won again when I was 5. Besides that, I have gotten academic awards at school, and the occasional ribbon on school sports days.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE PLACE? WHERE?
I don’t have a specific place that is my favourite. I like being in wide, open spaces, like grassy fields, or by the sea on a hot day, and I love bushland, and especially forests. There’s something so peaceful about them, and every step through them is an adventure.

 DO YOU HAVE ANY REGRETS?
I have a few, but nothing major. I regret little things like missed opportunities, comments made in a conflict and acting on impulse. I especially regret it when I snap at my mum if I’m having a bad day, so I have learnt to think before I speak, and if I slip up I always apologise straight after.

 WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST FEAR?
I am afraid of disappointing my family and friends. I seriously fear not being good enough to make them proud of me, and tell me I’ve done well. Also, I’m kind of frightened of clowns. A lot. And spiders, too.

WHAT DO YOU MOST LOOK FORWARD TO?
Life. The future. Anything and everything that is going to happen to me in my lifetime, the good and the bad. The good will be what it will, the bad will teach me important life lessons and help me to better understand life itself, and what it means to be a part of it. Whatever opportunities that may come up, I cannot wait to grab and run with them. Whether there are dangers to be faced, choices to be made, fun to be had or bonds to be formed, I want to be ready to take it all in my stride and live my life to its potential.

Some of them are biased towards particular students. It’s sometimes quite obvious.

A lot of Thais consider religion to be a very important factor in their lives and I agree, although I do not really practice my religion that much.

WHAT OTHER INTERESTS DO YOU HAVE – SPORT, HORSE-RIDING, READING, MUSIC? TELL US MORE.

I love music. Music is a very big part in my life. Without music, my life would be a lot different from now, and I don’t think I can live without music in my daily life.

IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO BE WHATEVER YOU WANTED, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I would love to be in a professional band. It must be amazing doing what I love doing the most as my own job. That would be very special!

 WHAT WORRIES YOU MOST?

What worries me the most right now is again, college. It must be a big life-changing step in my life, and I want to do it right.

DO YOU THINK BEING A PARENT IS A TOUGH JOB?

Yes I do, I think that everyone deserves to have rights of their own.

WHO DO YOU ADMIRE MOST? WHY?

I can’t pick one particular person, but I admire people who are very diverse in what they do or believe. It shows that they are not a one-dimensioned person. Personally I think that would be very boring.

DO YOU USE SOCIAL MEDIA OUTLETS (Twitter, Internet, MSN, Yahoo, Skype, emails & Facebook) TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR FRIENDS?

Yes of course! This is the age to be using all those social website isn’t it? Although I only use Facebook and Twitter.

DO YOU THINK POLITICIANS AND WORLD LEADERS ARE DOING A GOOD JOB?

I personally don’t have a lot of faith in politicians, but some of the world leaders are very admirable, such as Nelson Mandela.

 WHAT INSPIRES YOU THE MOST?

What inspires me the most is passion. I believe that we should be passionate about everything we like. Without passion, there wouldn’t be any excitement.

WHAT, OR WHO, HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? WHY?

My father has been the biggest influence in my life. He has shown me how honesty can win a lot of trust in people. I personally dislike people who are unfaithful and deceitful. I believe that if I do good things, they will come in return.

Yes, I do! I love reading books, although time is against me sometimes.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK? WHY?

My favourite book is ‘Angela’s Ashes’ by Frank McCourt. It is a true story, which describes how a young Irish lad is having to adapt to his many hardships in life. The book is very inspiring because it has taught me that it is not easy to win things in your life.

WHAT WAS THE WORST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO YOU?

I can’t recall the worst thing that happened to me. If bad things happen in my life, I will surely be depressed, but I know that sooner or later I have to move on and live my life, not having to dwell on the past.

Yes, sometimes. I believe that poverty and refugees are big issues concerning the world.

Copyright Clancy Tucker (c)

DO YOU DO ANY CHARITABLE WORK?

No, not really. But I would love to if I have a chance to!

WHAT, OR WHO, ANNOYS YOU MOST?

I hate liars, and deceitful people. I do not know why these kinds of people exist. They must be ashamed of themselves.

 DO YOU HAVE ANY REGRETS?

Yes, many, but I’ve gotten over them quite quickly.

 WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST FEAR?

My biggest fear revolves around spiders and heights. I simply cannot stand them!

WHAT DO YOU MOST LOOK FORWARD TO?

I’m looking forward to graduating and starting my university life. It must be very exciting!

13 September 2012 - Young Guest - 'AK'

Copyright - Clancy Tucker

Quote of the day:

"Events are less important

than our response to them."

John Hersey

G'day guys,

Today I am pleased to introduce my second young guest - 'AK' who hails from Camano Island,Washington State, USA.  This young man is a college graduate who seems to know where he is going. He certainly comes from a beautiful part of America. Camano Island is an island in the Possession Sound portion of Puget Sound, located in Island County, Washington, between Whidbey Island and the mainland. The body of water separating Whidbey Island and Camano Island is called Saratoga Passage. You may have heard that Richard Bach, a pilot and author of the 1970s bestselling book "Jonathan Livingston Seagull," was seriously injured on September 2nd when he flipped his small aircraft on landing at the island in northwestern Washington State. Welcome, AK. Tell us what you think.

YOUNG GUEST - 'AK'

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOU – GENDER, HEIGHT, AGE AND PERSONALITY.

I am a 23 year old male college graduate from The Evergreen State College. I am about 6 feet tall, and am an ENFJ on the Meyers Brigg's personality scale (a slightly extroverted, empathic giver).

WHICH COUNTRY DO YOU LIVE IN?

I live in the United States.

DO YOU LIVE WITH ONE OR BOTH OF YOUR PARENTS? HOW IS IT GOING?

I just graduated from college and made the choice to move back in with my mom in my hometown (Camano Island, Washington) as I do a year of service with AmeriCorps Vista.

DO YOU LIVE IN A CITY, RURAL, BEACHSIDE, HIGH-RISE OR DESERT AREA?

Camano Island is a small rural town (though not much of an island at all), I live on a hill near the water (about a half mile). Camano Island is made up mostly of families and retirees.

DID YOU ATTEND A PRIVATE OR GOVERNMENT COLLEGE?

I graduated from The Evergreen State College, a liberal arts state college.

 WHAT YEAR DID YOU GRADUATE?

I just graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts in March of this year.

IS IT AN ALL GIRLS / BOYS SCHOOL, OR CO-ED?

Co-ed

WHAT DID YOU LIKE AND DISLIKE ABOUT COLLEGE?

Evergreen was awesome because there was no graduation requirements and we had 'programs' instead of classes, multi-disciplinary classes with usually more than 1 teachers connecting seemingly unlikely subjects. It was a great school, though we did not have grades, which though it seems like a dream to most students made me realize how much I like a concrete grading standard. Look it up: http://www.evergreen.edu/

HAVE YOU BEEN BULLIED AT SCHOOL? BRIEFLY, WHAT HAPPENED?

I was never bullied during elementary, middle, or high school. Though I did realize that sometimes it was important to tease other kids to take the flack off of myself.  (I was a bit of a nerd).

DID YOU HAVE A PART-TIME JOB AFTER SCHOOL? WHAT WAS IT?

I used to have a part time job after high school at my public library.

WHO IS YOUR BEST FRIEND AND WHY?

My best friends are the few people that I can talk to forever without ever growing bored, the people that are always there for me whenever I need them. I'm blessed to have friends like that.

IS RELIGION IMPORTANT TO YOUR DAILY LIFE? WHY?

I am a very spiritual person, though do not believe in any organized religion.

WHAT OTHER INTERESTS DO YOU HAVE – SPORT, HORSE-RIDING, READING, MUSIC? TELL US MORE.

I love reading and have been getting into it for enjoyment a lot more since college ended. Right now I spend most of my free time hanging out with friends.

IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO BE WHATEVER YOU WANTED, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

A psychologist or counselor.

ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT?

Yes, very, though I think that it's a little overwhelming to let thoughts about it flood my consciousness too often, it can get depressing.

HAVE YOU TRAVELLED OUTSIDE YOUR OWN COUNTRY? WHERE?

I've been to Canada several times since I'm so close to the border. I have also been to Costa Rica, which was an amazing experience.

IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO SAY SOMETHING TO ALL WORLD LEADERS, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?

We really need to concentrate on fixing our environmental problems, we all share this world, and if it fails we will fall with it.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

After my year with AmeriCorps I plan to move to Portland, get a job in a HR capacity, and finish my education by getting a masters in counseling.

 WHAT WORRIES YOU MOST?

The state of the environment and the world, that some catastrophic environmental issue will make life incredibly different in just a matter of years.

WHAT WORRIES YOU MOST ABOUT THE WORLD?

The same

DO YOU THINK BEING A PARENT IS A TOUGH JOB?

Being a parent must be an incredibly touch job, I am blessed to have amazing parents that love my unconditionally. I love kids, but parenthood frightens me though and is something I don't plan to start anytime soon.

DO YOU EVER STAND UP FOR YOURSELF OR THE RIGHTS OF OTHERS?

I always try to stand up for myself and the rights of others I am around, though it can be difficult sometimes.

WHO DO YOU ADMIRE MOST? WHY?

This is hard. I admire protesters a lot, anyone that stands up and says that enough is enough and something needs to change and is then willing to get out there and do something about it.

DO YOU USE SOCIAL MEDIA OUTLETS (Twitter, Internet, MSN, Yahoo, Skype, emails & Facebook) TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR FRIENDS?

I use facebook far more than I would like to admit.

DO YOU THINK POLITICIANS AND WORLD LEADERS ARE DOING A GOOD JOB?

Yes and no, I believe that most world leaders today are doing their best to enact environmental laws that will heal our world, but I don't think that anyone is doing enough.

 WHAT INSPIRES YOU THE MOST?

People that stand up for what they believe in.

WHAT, OR WHO, HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? WHY?

My high school AP literature teacher was a huge influence on me in high school. After my parents divorced I was very unmotivated in school and doing a lot of drugs, she pushed me to my full potential and told me that I was better than the substandard effort I was putting forth. In a lot of ways Mrs. Dartnal got me to graduate high school and get into college when I was in a phase when I just didn't care.

 DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT DAY.

A sunny day in the woods, with friends, on a hike, drinking beers.

 DO YOU READ BOOKS?

Yes, all the time. I prefer fiction though. I like the escapism in it.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK? WHY?

‘Siddhartha’ maybe, or ‘As I Lay Dying’ or ‘Heart of Darkness’. I also really love the whole ‘A Song of Fire’ and ‘Ice Fantasy’ series.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE? WHY?

Too many.

WHAT WAS THE WORST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO YOU?

I guess the most awful experiences in my life have been the deaths and physical ailments of others. I had a friend that died far too young and it was really difficult to accept that she was dead and I'd never really be able to talk to her again. Also, when my mother had a brain tumor and was in the hospital to get it removed that was a very difficult experience. It's feelings of helplessness which are the most absolutely difficult to deal with.

WHAT WAS THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO YOU?

Being born. In more concrete experience I guess going to college at the Evergreen State College, traveling (something absolutely everyone should do, even if only in their home country), and making difficult decisions.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE?

I would create a plan to wean the world off of oil as a form of energy. I'd like to fix the world's environmental issues, but don't know enough to say quite exactly how I'd do that.

DO YOU THINK MUCH ABOUT WORLD POVERTY, REFUGEES, ASYLUM SEEKERS AND HOMELESS PEOPLE?

Sometimes, I think most people try their hardest to avoid thinking about homeless and disadvantaged people, it's far easier to walk past or look the other way than to admit that there is a serious problem that needs fixing.

DO YOU DO ANY CHARITABLE WORK?

I just started a year of service with AmeriCorps Vista, working with the local Community Resource Foundation to create a job skills training program for youths.

WHAT, OR WHO, ANNOYS YOU MOST?

Republicans. People that stubbornly espouse ideals but don't really have any idea what they're talking about or what's going on in the world.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR?

Graduating college probably.

HAVE YOU WON ANY PRIZES AND AWARDS? TELL US MORE.

Not for some time, I used to be a very good student in high school and won some academic prizes.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE PLACE? WHERE?

My favorite place in Washington is French Creek near the small mountain town of Darrington. It runs along an old logging trail on a cliff/hill through old growth forests. The trail runs alongside a river and there is a massive split waterfall that you can get to.

 DO YOU HAVE ANY REGRETS?

I try not to dwell on my regrets. I don't think it's healthy to dwell in the past.

 WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST FEAR?

My biggest fear is dying of cancer. Along with that my biggest fear is not having a meaningful and spiritually fulfilled life.

WHAT DO YOU MOST LOOK FORWARD TO?

Making a difference.

Footnote: AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Authorized in 1964 and founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965, VISTA was incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs in 1993.  VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for more than 45 years.

2. "High School is like a spork: it's a crappy spoon and a crappy fork, so in the end it's just plain useless.”

YOUNG GUEST - 'LA'

G'day guys,

Today I welcome my first young guest - 'LA'.  He is a bright young Australian and, to be transparent, I must advise that I've known him since he was a kid. His father is one of my best mates. Okay. LA is a very likeable character with a good brain and a charming personality. He is respectful and a forward thinker who lives in the State of Queensland, Australia. Oh, did I mention that LA gained his pilot's licence before his motor vehicle licence?  Yep, that's one of the reasons why I asked him to be a guest on my blog ... thought he'd have some interesting things to say. Welcome, LA. Tell us more.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOU – GENDER, HEIGHT, AGE AND PERSONALITY.

I’m a male, 17, roughly 6 foot, and kind of an outgoing, like to have fun personality.

WHICH COUNTRY DO YOU LIVE IN?

Australia

DO YOU LIVE WITH ONE OR BOTH OF YOUR PARENTS? HOW IS IT GOING?

I’m currently with both parents. Seems to be going ok.

DO YOU LIVE IN A CITY, RURAL, BEACHSIDE, HIGH-RISE OR DESERT AREA?

I live in a suburb north of Brisbane.

DO YOU ATTEND A PRIVATE OR GOVERNMENT SCHOOL?

I attend a private school

WHAT YEAR ARE YOU CURRENTLY ATTENDING?

Currently in year 12

IS IT AN ALL GIRLS / BOYS SCHOOL, OR CO-ED?

It’s an all guys school, but an all girls school 100m down the road….YAYA!!!

1965 Ford Mustang

WHAT DO YOU LIKE AND DISLIKE ABOUT SCHOOL?

I love the music and industrial skills departments, the teachers are pretty casual and will always help

WHAT SUCKS MOST ABOUT THE TEACHERS?

Their life experience is minimal, it seems like they are all straight from uni and that’s it. But that’s only for some teachers. The others have heaps.

HAVE YOU BEEN BULLIED AT SCHOOL? WHAT HAPPENED?

Not that I can remember….

DO YOU HAVE A PART-TIME JOB AFTER SCHOOL? WHERE?

I did a month, at Supercheap Auto. I resigned due to school commitments.

WHO IS YOUR BEST FRIEND AND WHY?

Too many great guys and girls to name

WHAT OTHER INTERESTS DO YOU HAVE – SPORT, HORSE-RIDING, READING, MUSIC? TELL US MORE.

My interests are aviation, flying when I can, fixing anything – cars, mowers, anything that has moving parts or that needs maintenance. Also I love woodwork and designing wooden objects.

IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO BE WHATEVER YOU WANTED, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

A pilot of a 787 Dreamliner, but before those the owner of a 1965 Ford mustang white coupe, the pilot/owner/engineer of a Mk.26B Spitfire and an owner/driver of a jet boat. Or lastly a seaplane charter pilot.

ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT?

Depends which situation. The litter yes, the oil spills are inevitable but, they need to be taken care of to prevent more. More bins need to be available anywhere and everywhere. Apart from that it seems to be holding its own.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner

HAVE YOU TRAVELLED OUTSIDE YOUR OWN COUNTRY? WHERE?

Yes, USA, New Zealand (both islands) and Malaysia.

IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO SAY SOMETHING TO EVERY WORLD LEADER, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THEM?

Put forward your idea/plan then let the people speak and listen to them first before you make your decision. FIND THE LOGIC IN THE PLAN/IDEA FIRST BEFORE MAKING IT!!!!

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

To achieve the previous stated dreams. But to become a licensed aircraft maintenance engineer, get a decent car, get a new job, house or apartment???

 WHAT WORRIES YOU MOST?

Dying, becoming physically or mentally disabled that would prevent my dreams.

WHAT WORRIES YOU MOST ABOUT THE WORLD?

The scientific and technological discoveries we make getting used for the wrong purposes. The overall logic in people’s actions. There doesn’t seem to be much logic in people anymore.

DO YOU THINK BEING A PARENT IS A TOUGH JOB?

Absolutely, from being the child, I can see it would be hard, but definitely worth it. I hope to have my own in the future.

DO YOU EVER STAND UP FOR YOURSELF OR THE RIGHTS OF OTHERS?

For myself yes, if it is my place to do so for others yes, if not, I do what I can.

WHO DO YOU ADMIRE MOST? WHY?

Matt Hall (the aerobatic pilot). He has achieved what he has wanted too and has had a ball doing it. My Grandfather (pop). He seemed to know everything about everything, and was a WWII fighter pilot.

DO YOU THINK POLITICIANS AND WORLD LEADERS ARE DOING A GOOD JOB?

Not anymore. Some try which is awesome, some have no logic and don’t seem to care what people think.

 WHO INSPIRES YOU THE MOST?

John Mayer, Matt Hall, pop, my physics teacher.

WHAT OR WHO HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE SO FAR? WHY?

Some of John Mayer’s quotes and some near death experiences of mine.

DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT DAY.

Waking up is a start haha, flying/soaring through clouds and/or around mountains, go for a drive in my 1965 Mustang as stated before, then go for a ride in my jet boat, followed by a romantic night with my gorgeous girlfriend.

 DO YOU READ BOOKS?

Not for a while, but starting to again now

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK? WHY?

Memoirs of a WWII fighter pilot

Cockpit of Boeing 787 Dreamliner

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE? WHY?

Either ‘Iron man’, or ‘Transformers’ or ‘The Island’.

WHAT WAS THE WORST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO YOU?

Being in a bus crash in Malaysia; stopping 2 metres from the edge of a cliff.

WHAT WAS THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO YOU?

Achieving my recreational pilot’s license and taking my pop as my first passenger. Getting my driver’s license.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE?

Take the majority of laws away, let people make their own decisions about things. As long it wouldn’t endanger other people’s good time or safety.

DO YOU THINK MUCH ABOUT WORLD POVERTY, REFUGEES, ASYLUM SEEKERS AND HOMELESS PEOPLE?

World poverty yes, homeless people yes, asylum seekers and refugees no, they need to help themselves like the homeless do, not get someone to do it for them.

DO YOU DO ANY CHARITABLE WORK?

Yes I sometimes help and donate to the St Vincent de Paul, helped with Rosie’s Street Van, going out and feeding the homeless. I give blood when I can.

WHAT OR WHO PISSES YOU OFF MOST?

Inexperienced drivers doing over confident things. People who aren’t genuine. i.e not acting like themselves.

Yr 7 most improved for touch footy, hold a record for backstroke in the 13yr olds at my primary school. Some music competition awards.

Watts Bridge airfield near Somerset dam.

 DO YOU HAVE ANY REGRETS?

I was walking through a girls school one day as it was the quickest way to my bus stop, and I was in a bit of a shit mood, but I saw this pretty girl trip over and she seemed to hurt herself, but I kept walking when she could have been a potential girlfriend. Although I’m insanely happy with my current girlfriend. Or waiting to ask someone out, then someone else beats you too it.

WHAT DO YOU MOST LOOK FORWARD TO?

What the future holds for the world and me.

Thanks, LA. Keep going. You seem to be heading in a good direction. Happy birthday tomorrow.

YOUNG GUESTS

G'day guys,

To date, I have had adults as guests on this blog. However, as a young adult fiction writer, I thought I might add some youth to my blog. Why not, eh? We all might learn something. The plan is to have young adults from all over the world, answering questions about their own lives, and how they see the world. So far, I have plans to hear from young adults from the following countries: USA, Australia, Israel, Turkey, Egypt, UK, Nigeria and New Zealand. What will we learn? Good question. Heaps I guess. Most of them will be from 16 to 24 years-of-age and have an opinion about everything. If you have someone who wants to be a guest, just email me:- clancy_tucker@hotmail.com. Here is a sample of topics I have asked them so we know what they think and where they are coming from.

For obvious reasons, I will not mention their addresses, show their photographs or provide any links that will identify them. I am more interested in their attitudes and thoughts. My first young guest will appear on 8th of September - 'LA'.
